The Chief Radio Electronics Technician (CRET) is directly responsible to the Ship’s Communication Officer (SCO). The CRET supervises watch standing personnel, coordinates planned maintenance, provides technical assistance, conducts training, maintains technical publications and files, ensures COMSEC procedures are complied with, and ensures compliance with safety procedures. The CRET
advises the SCO on condition of equipment, and may be required to work aloft or over-side. The CRET operates Command, Control, Communications, and Computer Systems, including equipment used for communication and identification. The CRET uses knowledge of electronic theory and a skill in
interpreting technical information to perform equipment inspection, evaluation of performance, problem
troubleshooting, preventive, and corrective maintenance, and repairs. The CRET must be knowledgeable of the Electrical Safety Program and safety requirements of assigned equipment, and may be assigned as the department tag out/lock out coordinator. The CRET supervises and trains assigned personnel in the proper performance of their duties. Performs other duties as assigned.
Must be a United States Citizen of at least 18 years of age and possess and maintain a valid:
1. U. S. Passport with a minimum of 7 months remaining of expiration date,
2. United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner’s Document (MMD), or Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), with a minimum of 10 months remaining of expiration.
3. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card with a minimum of 10 months remaining of expiration date.
4. Must have experience supervising a communications watch team in a shipboard
environment or U.S. Navy trained IT, RM, CTO, CTA, CTI, CTM, CTR, CTT, FC, FT, ST, OS, AT, ET rating (E-6 and above) electronic maintenance and/or radio room experience, OR other government/military/commercial equivalent experience obtained in other
Government, Uniformed or Merchant Marine Service and/or related education is a plus.
